Defend The Crown took the distinctive performance world of The Royal Family from Aotearoa to audiences across Europe.
Created from The Palace Dance Studio ecosystem in Auckland, The Royal Family has built an international identity around choreography, precision, collective movement and a highly recognisable visual language. The challenge for the European tour was to translate that identity from the studio and screen into a repeatable live touring experience. (thepalacedancestudio)
NJL Productions provided production and lighting (LX) support for the tour, helping create the technical environment in which choreography, music, movement and visual design could operate as one experience.
Lighting was more than illumination. It helped define space, focus attention, establish rhythm and amplify the physical impact of the choreography. Production systems needed to support a performance built around bodies in motion while remaining practical enough to move between venues and reproduce the creative intent throughout the tour.
The result demonstrates an approach that remains central to Sweet Orange:
Design the experience first. Build the event around it.
Rather than treating production as infrastructure sitting behind a performance, Defend The Crown shows how production becomes part of the participant experience itself. Choreography, lighting, sound, spatial composition and audience attention combine to create a temporary world — one that can travel while retaining its identity.
For Sweet Orange, the project is an early example of the thinking that now informs our work across experiential events: understanding the creative identity first, designing the participant experience around it, and then developing the production systems required to make that experience repeatable, scalable and memorable.
Location → Identity → Experience → Engagement → Memory
