Brief
Chris Cuffaro’s Greatest Hits brings more than three decades of music photography into an interactive digital experience.
The project extends Cuffaro’s physical exhibition beyond the gallery wall. Working with Chris Cuffaro, iSPARX™ developed a bespoke AR+artist™ application designed as a digital companion to the touring exhibition.
The objective was simple: allow audiences to move beyond the photograph and discover the people, stories and material surrounding each image.
The Experience
The Greatest Hits app creates an additional layer around Cuffaro’s photography.
Visitors can explore selected works alongside supporting material including video, archival content, proof sheets, interviews, journals, articles and personal memorabilia. The application is designed to evolve as the exhibition changes, allowing the digital experience to remain connected with the physical collection. (iSPARX™)
This approach turns the exhibition into an expandable media archive rather than a fixed presentation.

a custom 110B Polaroid camera emulator

Connecting Music and Photography
Cuffaro has photographed artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, George Michael, Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, INXS, Jane’s Addiction, Soundgarden and No Doubt. His work has appeared across major music publications and on more than 300 album and CD covers. (iSPARX™)
Greatest Hits uses digital media to provide context around these images without replacing the photography itself.
The photograph remains the starting point. The application provides another way into the story.
Exhibition to Digital Platform
The application was developed alongside the Chris Cuffaro Greatest Hits Auckland exhibition in February 2023 and continues as an evolving digital platform. (iSPARX™)
Rather than producing a temporary exhibition app, the project established a reusable digital framework that can change with new photographs, locations and supporting material.
It demonstrates how a physical music archive can extend into an ongoing mobile experience while maintaining the identity and authorship of the artist.
Outcome
Greatest Hits connects photography, music history and digital storytelling within one experience.
For audiences, it provides deeper access to the material behind the photographs.
For the artist, it creates a controlled digital environment in which existing archives can be expanded and presented over time.
For touring exhibitions, it provides a flexible layer that can travel and evolve alongside the physical work.
